Update on the Restoration of The Church
Work commenced on
16th October 2007, with the original intention of
undertaking
external repairs including stonework re-pointing;
stone repairs; renewal of rainwater
gutters and pipes, and stonework cleaning.
During the course
of these works, a severe outbreak of dry rot was
found in the roof
above the Sacristy. This was dealt with, but it
was found to have extended into the
main timber roof trusses in the main body of the
Church. A further ourbreak of dry rot
was found in in the trusses on the other side of
the Church, to the extent that substantial
scaffolding had to be erected.
The cost of works
was significantly more than was anticipated when
the original works
commenced, and a meeting was held at which the Vicar
General was present.
The Vicar General
proposed that, as scaffolding was in place, full
use of that scaffolding
should be made. Thus, the underside of the main
roof was insulated to prevent heat loss;
the central heating boiler was replaced by up-to-date
boilers; the electrical system was
renewed together with improved lighting; new and
more efficient heating radiators were
installed, and specialist fans installed at high
level to drive rising heat back down into
the Church area.
All wall plaster
was hacked off and renewed and specialist presevation
treatment was
applied.
Further, as damage
had occurred to the High Altar due to falling plaster,
it was agreed
by the Archdiocese that both side Altars and the
High Altar br removed, repaired and
refurbished.
Painting of the main
body of the Church followed together with the cleaning
and sanding
of the floor.
Works are due to
be completed on 28th November 2008 with the Church,
in its new
form, ready for Christmas.
